Rwanda and Loudi City to Strengthen Partnership in Agriculture
On 17th April 2026, the Embassy received a delegation from the Loudi Municipal People’s Government, led by Mr. Deng Wei, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office.
The two sides discussed avenues for strengthening cooperation in agriculture, investment, and technical exchange, and agreed to deepen collaboration between Rwanda and Loudi City of Hunan Province in the agricultural sector. This marks a significant step forward in advancing bilateral economic ties. As part of this engagement, Loudi Agricultural Development Limited plans to invest in Rwanda through a pilot farming project focused on rice cultivation and production, with potential expansion into other agricultural value chains.
The project will be implemented in Muhanga District, a region with strong agricultural potential. It will introduce a range of modern farming practices, including the use of improved seed varieties, advanced agricultural machinery, and innovative post-harvest technologies. These are expected to enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve the overall efficiency of agricultural operations.
Beyond boosting production, the initiative is also expected to contribute to skills transfer and capacity building for local farmers, supporting Rwanda’s broader ambition to modernize its agricultural sector and ensure food security.
This pilot project represents a direct outcome of the partnership established between Muhanga District and Loudi City, which officially became sister cities during the 2025 China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE) held in Changsha, Hunan Province. The sister-city agreement laid the foundation for practical cooperation across multiple sectors, with agriculture identified as a key priority.
Looking ahead, this initial investment is expected to pave the way for additional projects by companies from Loudi, spanning various sectors beyond agriculture. It underscores the growing momentum of cooperation between Rwanda and China, as well as the increasing role of city-to-city partnerships in driving tangible development outcomes.
As Rwanda continues to position itself as a hub for modern agriculture and agribusiness in Africa, collaborations such as this highlight the country’s openness to investment, innovation, and international partnerships that deliver shared prosperity.
